چکیده

For decades, the genus Pelomedusa has been thought of as containing only a single species that is widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and Madagascar. However, ten species and up to five candidate species have been recognized recently. For these taxa, ecological information is scarce and distribution ranges are often only incompletely known. In this study, ecological niche spaces were estimated for eight Pelomedusa species, using a maximum entropy algorithm and geographical, climatic, and topographic information. Using the obtained models and Schoener’s D and Hellinger’s I indices, areas of sympatry between species were estimated and candidate areas for possibly overlooked taxa were identified. Furthermore, differences in niche spaces between species were assessed. The ecological niche models revealed geographical spaces that match the predicted niche of the eight examined species. However, for P. subrufa sensu stricto, the distribution range of the introduced populations in Madagascar was not predicted. Our models, together with statistical analyses, indicate that the studied Pelomedusa species occupy different geographical spaces. Areas of sympatry with significant niche overlap were identified between some species pairs. Yet, Pelomedusa species are generally allopatrically or parapatrically distributed. A minimum of five candidate regions possibly harbouring unknown taxa were identified. Our results provide a better understanding of the distribution ranges of Pelomedusa species and, thus, can serve as a basis for conservation planning.

A revision of African helmeted terrapins (Testudines: Pelomedusidae: Pelomedusa), with descriptions of six new species.

Using nearly range-wide sampling, we analyze up to 1848 bp of mitochondrial DNA of 183             helmeted terrapins and identify a minimum of 12 deeply divergent species-level clades. Uncorrected p distances of these clades equal or clearly exceed those between the currently recognized species of Pelusios, the genus most closely related to Pelomedusa. We correlate genetic discontinuities of P...

Important new records of Pelomedusa species for South Africa and Ethiopia

Because of a recent taxonomic revision, the species identity of helmeted terrapins (Pelomedusa) became unclear in many regions of their wide distribution range. Based on mtDNA sequence data, here we present the first record of Pelomedusa subrufa sensu stricto for the South African province of Mpumalanga. In South Africa, this species was previously known only from a single record in the provinc...

Linking Landscape Data with Population Viability Analysis: Management Options for the Helmeted Honeyeater

Habitats used by most species are becoming increasingly fragmented, requiring a metapopulation modelling approach to population viability analysis. Recognizing habitat patchiness from an endangered species' point of view requires utilization of spatial information on habitat suitability. Both of these requirements may be met by linking metapopulation modelling with landscape data using GIS tech...

Deep genealogical lineages in the widely distributed African helmeted terrapin: evidence from mitochondrial and nuclear DNA (Testudines: Pelomedusidae: Pelomedusa subrufa).

We investigated the phylogeographic differentiation of the widely distributed African helmeted terrapin Pelomedusa subrufa based on 1503 base pairs of mitochondrial DNA (partial cyt b and ND4 genes with adjacent tRNAs) and 1937 bp of nuclear DNA (partial Rag1, Rag2, R35 genes). Congruent among different analyses, nine strongly divergent mitochondrial clades were found, representing three major ...

Disentangling the Pelomedusa complex using type specimens and historical DNA (Testudines: Pelomedusidae).

Recent research has shown that the helmeted terrapin (Pelomedusa subrufa), a species that occurs throughout sub-Saharan Africa, in Madagascar and the southwestern Arabian Peninsula, consists of several deeply divergent genetic lineages. Here we examine all nominal taxa currently synonymized with Pelomedusa subrufa (Bonnaterre, 1789) and provide mitochondrial DNA sequences of type specimens or t...
